What sample material can I easily collect myself?

For horses, hair root samples are particularly well suited as starting material for DNA analyses. Suitable places to take them are the mane or the tail, where the hair is dense and strong with well-developed roots. They are not classified as dangerous goods and not as ‚biological substance, category B‘ (the UN 3373 declaration applies to infectious samples only!). What are SNP markers and profiles?

SNP markers (single nucleotide polymorphisms) are small, specific differences in the genome in which individual DNA building blocks (A, C, G or T) vary at a particular position. Because these „differences“ are often inherited, they serve to identify genes and disease risks and to produce genetic fingerprints (ID profiles).

What are multifactorial genetic diseases?

These are diseases caused by an interplay of genetic and external factors. Affected animals carry genetic predispositions (usually variants in several genes). Only in combination with external factors do symptoms and sometimes severe conditions develop.
