In dogs with a homozygous ABCB1/MDR1 gene defect, there is an increased uptake of certain drugs into the central nervous system. This results in severe poisoning at normal dosage. Affected drugs include ivermectin, doramectin, moxidectin and loperamide. Even heterozygous occurrence can result in severe poisoning at normal dosage.
